World Health Organization Raises Alert Over Critical Lack of Obesity Medications

Fewer than 10% of patients that would benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy have access to them, warns the WHO as it issues its initial guidance on the drugs.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide now obese, it is advocating for increased and just access to this class of drugs.

According to estimates, over two billion could be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines recognises that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are significant barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, says the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Even in the current most optimistic outlook, the manufacturing of such drugs might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation encourages nations and manufacturers to increase availability, via measures including patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Work

The injections mimick a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and boost satiety so individuals eat less.

Individuals typically see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Evidence indicates people may regain a significant portion after a year of halting the drug, when their normal hunger return.

To be overweight or obese raises your chance for developing diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Excess weight affects individuals in countries worldwide and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
