The Video Platform Grants Viewers Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to cut down on the amount of AI-created media appearing in their streams. This step comes as the platform disclosed that it now features over 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a widespread rollout. This shift coincides with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by new video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform only show clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content made with AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we aim to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” said a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as AI-generated. Collectively, in excess of 100 million media items are submitted to the platform each day, making AI content a limited part of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Members will be able to limit or boost the volume of artificial media they view by using the content preference option in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the setting encompass current affairs, style, cosmetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its rules mandate users to identify convincing artificially created content, and it bans dangerous AI impersonations of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is unmarked can be taken down under its community policies.

In addition, the app will henceforth attach an artificially created label to content created with its built-in AI features, or identified by an collaborative effort for identifying AI-generated material. This action is designed to stop users from trying to bypass the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also introducing a $2 million AI literacy fund for specialists and groups to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to training coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The platform has supported its content review process, following discussion over plans to lay off a large number of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is planning to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation team in London, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by removing the most harmful content ahead of it has to be seen by staff. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content reviewed by content reviewers over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
