The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
