Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
