In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, without immediately offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the region, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
