The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
