A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
